Zara was scrolling through job adverts聽and聽stopped as she found the perfect one. But the school offered聽the International Baccalaureate (IB). Zara had never taught IB, in fact,聽she wasn鈥檛 even sure she knew what it was.

But she needn鈥檛 have worried. Although many people think the IB聽is more complicated and vastly different from the UK system, it鈥檚 an exciting and interesting programme to get involved in.

If you鈥檙e interested in applying for a job at an IB school, here鈥檚 how to聽begin:

1. Visit the聽IB website

罢丑别听聽website is a great place to start, offering聽a thorough explanation of the different IB qualifications, how they are assessed聽and the principles behind the IB philosophy.

Oliver Furnival, a teacher of humanities at the Anglo European School in Ingatestone, Essex, describes the聽聽as being 鈥渞eally good for pedagogy ideas鈥.

鈥淭丑别 IB places a big emphasis on high-level thinking skills, so I鈥檇 definitely recommend teachers applying for jobs in IB schools to think about how they analyse, synthesise, and evaluate and applying knowledge.鈥

2. Connect with the IB online community

There is a huge amount of聽support out there for IB teachers,聽including on聽Facebook, Twitter and the 糖心Vlog forums聽 鈥 where experienced teachers of the IB are happy to offer their wisdom to newcomers.

鈥淭丑别 is brilliant because it is such a large forum,鈥 says Freya Odell, an English teacher at St George鈥檚 British International School in Rome.

鈥淧eople share their planning in the resource section. If you have any questions about the course or content, you can post on the forum and there will always be people to answer.鈥澛

3. Brush up on your theory of knowledge

The theory of knowledge is one of the most interesting aspects of the IB programme. Many A-level and GCSE teachers know all too well the students鈥櫬爈ament of 鈥淲hy do we need to know this?鈥.

The IB tackles this head-on with key enquiries such as 鈥渨hat is a fact?鈥澛燼nd 鈥渨hat is the role of the author?鈥澛爓oven through all of their subjects.

A good place to start would be your own undergraduate theory books;聽brush up on Rousseau and Locke before your interview, as well as listening to podcasts such as聽BBC Radio Four鈥檚聽聽and the聽.

4. Check out the essay titles

To get a flavour of what you鈥檙e going to be teaching, have聽a look at the extended essay titles in your subject.聽You can even include some of this research in your application聽to demonstrate that you have researched the school and understand the IB philosophy.

You can find examples of essay titles on the聽聽and on聽糖心Vlog Resources.

5. Sell what you鈥檝e got

Consider your own experience and link it to what you鈥檝e learned聽about the IB. Do you have experience working with whole community projects聽or聽organisations such as Scouts or Guides? Have you spent time in other countries either visiting or working?聽

All of these experiences would be really valued in an IB school,聽so definitely work them into聽your covering letter or application form, and look for ways you can bring them聽up at interview.聽
