Can you find out who scared the bear? Watch our fun animation and see how many words rhyme with ‘air’. Can you count how many we have used?

A bit of fun for the youngest pupils, a great lesson starter for many ages or a revision song for some!

Enhance your phonics teaching using our funny animation and worksheet packed with words that use the ‘air’ phoneme/trigraph and ones that sound the same.

You could give more able pupils the lyrics sheet and ask them to draw a blue line under the air phonemes (or words). Draw a brown line under the ear phonemes/words that rhyme with bear. Draw a green line under the are words that rhyme with care. Draw a red line under any other phonemes or words that rhyme but are different/odd, like where. Some pupils would be able to create their own table to show the lists of words found.

Other pupils could use the prepared worksheet that already lists the words used in the animation but could still colour code the words on that sheet before listing them in the table.

Note: Since bear, pear (and also wear, swear) are quite unusual for rhyming with air, it can be useful to have a look at these words while studying ‘air’, but beware, if you are following Read, Write Inc, that you will meet ear as in “hear with your ear,” in set 3, and if you use the song and sheet, you may need to introduce bear and pear as irregular to this.

When teaching, I often found that children met the word bear quite early in books, so it was useful to have introduced it already.
