A little starter I made for my group to remind them how to read equations. There is a little reminded about what I mean by the 'story' of the equation then a big scary looking equation, the students then have to write its story.

This is a nice little starter asking students to describe the operations on 'x' in the correct order, obviously understanding this is key to solving linear equations so it is a good thing to start with. You would maybe want a quick recap over BIDMAS before embarking upon this. You could maybe return to the equation at the end and get students to solve it as a plenary, having already written down the operations this should be simple once they understand inverse operations and balancing.
