Bring reading, writing, and science together with this primary-grade companion unit for the picture book Sterling: The Lovestruck Moose with a Heart for Cows by Vita Murrow & Laivi Põder. This resource is designed to support Grades 1–2 with developmentally appropriate, flexible activities that build comprehension, story structure understanding, and nonfiction science connections.

This unit includes before, during, and after reading activities, allowing teachers to intentionally select pages based on student needs. Activities emphasize visual supports, drawing-based responses, simple writing prompts, and early literacy skills.

Students will practice:
Making predictions and observations
Answering comprehension questions
Sequencing events and retelling the story
Identifying story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution)
Distinguishing fact vs. opinion
Exploring cause and effect
Writing opinions and personal responses
Learning nonfiction facts about moose and their habitats

Science connections include moose anatomy, behavior, habitats, and fun facts, supporting real-world learning and discussion. Creative and enrichment activities such as poetry, character traits, drawing, mazes, and design pages are also included.

This resource is designed to be used alongside the book and can be completed over 1–3 class sessions. Teachers are encouraged to choose activities rather than assign the entire packet at once.

Book not included—purchase link provided inside the unit.
