A full, detailed, ready-to-teach A-level History lesson for Edexcel A-Level History: Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603, focused on Depth Theme 2: Challenging Religious Changes, 1533–37.

This lesson introduces students to the impact of Henrician religious changes in the years 1533–37, exploring why the break with Rome, royal supremacy, Cromwellian reform and the dissolution of the monasteries provoked fear, resentment and opposition. Students examine how religious change became politically dangerous by challenging traditional authority, local religious life, conscience, property, community identity and obedience to the Crown.

The lesson encourages students to move beyond a simple explanation of “religious opposition” and instead consider the complex mixture of grievances that underpinned resistance to Henry VIII’s religious policies. Students explore how opposition could be religious, political, economic, social and regional, and why these grievances became powerful when they overlapped.
