A complete 3-week French unit designed specifically for mixed National 5 and Higher classes, with 9 coordinated lessons for teaching both levels together.

Designed for the reality of Scottish secondary classrooms, this complete teaching pack helps teachers deliver National 5 and Higher French simultaneously within the same class without effectively having to plan two separate courses.

The unit contains 9 fully planned 50-minute lessons across three weeks, all built around Family Relationships. Each lesson clearly identifies what the teacher does with one group while the other group works independently, before bringing both levels back together where appropriate.

What’s included:

• 9 complete coordinated lessons across 3 weeks
• National 5 and Higher learning pathways within every lesson
• Clear guidance showing teacher with X / other group does Y
• Detailed lesson timings and classroom choreography
• Printable pupil worksheets and activities
• Original French reading texts at appropriate levels
• Reading comprehension and inference activities
• Listening activities with teacher scripts
• French-to-English translation practice
• National 5 scaffolding and structured language support
• Higher extension, analysis and sophisticated language work
• Talking and sustained discussion activities
• Structured and discursive writing
• Higher mediation activities
• Independent tasks designed to enable simultaneous teaching
• Homework and assessment opportunities
• Answer keys and teacher guidance
• Feedback and self-assessment resources

The key feature of this resource is its mixed-level classroom design. National 5 work is not simply made harder for Higher pupils, and Higher work is not simply simplified for National 5. Each pathway develops the appropriate skills and level of challenge while allowing both groups to study the same broad topic together.

Pupils explore family structures, relationships, opinions, changing family dynamics, independence and intergenerational relationships, developing reading, listening, talking, translation and writing skills appropriate to their qualification level.

The pack can be taught as a complete three-week sequence or individual lessons and activities can be incorporated into an existing course.

All pupil texts and activities are independently authored. The resource has been developed with reference to the current National 5 and Higher Modern Languages frameworks in Scotland but is not an official Qualifications Scotland resource and is not endorsed by Qualifications Scotland.

Suitable for: Mixed National 5 and Higher French / S4-S6 French / Scottish Senior Phase / composite classes / mixed-level Modern Languages / Family and Relationships.
