This fully resourced two-week explanation writing unit explores the topic Life Cycles: From Egg to Adult. Pupils will investigate how mammals, amphibians, insects, birds, and even plants grow and reproduce—each following their own unique yet patterned life cycle. Using this rich science context, pupils will develop the skills to write clear, structured, and informative explanation texts.

Following Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, the unit guides pupils through modelled examples, scaffolded planning, targeted grammar instruction, and independent writing tasks. It supports cross-curricular teaching by reinforcing both science and literacy skills in a cohesive and engaging way.

This pack includes:

  • 10 detailed lessons with clear learning objectives and teacher modelling
  • A two-page WAGOLL (model text) with annotated teacher notes
  • Over 110 editable teaching slides
  • 17 pupil worksheets aligned with each stage of the writing process
  • Sentence stems, writing scaffolds, and success criteria
  • Grammar focus: conjunctions, fronted adverbials, and expanded noun phrases
  • Audio version of the WAGOLL for accessibility and EAL learners
  • Dyslexia-friendly font and layout
  • Quizzes, retrieval tasks, and assessment tools included

This unit is ideal for full-class instruction, small group support, or independent explanation writing, and supports the KS2 science topic Animals Including Humans as well as non-fiction writing outcomes.
