This fully scripted 60-minute IB DP Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lesson explores what scientists mean by models, theories, and laws, and why those distinctions matter for knowledge. It addresses a common misunderstanding in science: that a theory is just a guess. Students examine how models simplify reality, how theories explain evidence, and how laws describe regularities without necessarily explaining them.

The lesson begins with a short hook built around the phrase “It is just a theory.” Students compare the everyday meaning of the word theory with its scientific meaning and reflect on common misconceptions about models, laws, and scientific certainty. This leads into a clear introduction to the differences between models, theories, and laws, supported by practical examples.

The first main task is Activity 1: The Model Comparison. Students work through six scientific models: Newtonian mechanics, the Bohr atom, kinetic theory of gases, the flat Earth model for local use, the Standard Model of particle physics, and climate models. For each one, they consider what it gets right, where it breaks down, and why scientists still use it. This helps students see that a model can be limited or incomplete and still provide useful knowledge.

The second main task is Activity 2: The DNA Story and the Debate. Students follow the development of the DNA model from Miescher and Levene through Franklin, Watson and Crick, and Meselson and Stahl. They then take part in a structured debate on whether scientific models are best understood as tools or as accounts that track something real about the world. The lesson uses the DNA double helix as a case study in model-building, revision, and scientific success.
