This is a fully resourced, enquiry-led GCSE History lesson that explores how Adolf Hitler transformed his position from Chancellor to Führer between 1933 and 1934. Rather than presenting Hitler’s rise as inevitable, the lesson challenges students to analyse how a series of key decisions, taken during moments of crisis, enabled him to consolidate power step by step.

Students are guided through a structured sequence of decision-making tasks focused on the Reichstag Fire, emergency powers, the Enabling Act, the Night of the Long Knives and the death of President Hindenburg. Each decision requires students to evaluate which response would most increase Hitler’s power, emphasising legality, intimidation, speed and the removal of rivals rather than hindsight or moral judgement.

The lesson concludes with a continuum task in which students sort evidence-based statements along a luck–skill scale before reaching a supported overall judgement about why Hitler became Führer. This encourages evaluative thinking, causation and synthesis, closely mirroring GCSE judgement questions.
