Develop maths literacy and strengthen pupils’ understanding of graphs and functions with this mixed-level Match-Up resource.

The pack includes 10 ready-to-use activities, providing 100 term-and-definition matches, complete solution pages and an accompanying PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.

Pupils match 10 lettered mathematical terms to 10 numbered definitions on each activity. The format encourages careful reading, precise use of mathematical language and discussion of graph and function concepts that pupils often confuse.

Vocabulary covered includes:

• coordinates and the Cartesian plane
• x-axis, y-axis, origin and quadrants
• gradients and intercepts
• x-intercepts and y-intercepts
• turning points and regions
• graphs through the origin
• straight-line, quadratic and cubic graphs
• reciprocal and exponential graphs
• linear, exponential and trigonometric functions
• functional relationships
• function notation and range
• tables and scale drawings
• line graphs, column graphs and scatter graphs
• histograms, box plots and cumulative frequency

The activities help pupils distinguish between commonly confused ideas such as:

• an intercept and an x- or y-intercept
• the origin and a graph passing through the origin
• a straight-line graph and a linear function
• an exponential function and an exponential graph
• coordinates, quadrants and the Cartesian plane
• quadratic, cubic and reciprocal graphs
• function notation and the range of a function

The accompanying PowerPoint allows each activity to be displayed, discussed and completed as a class. Printable PDF activities and complete solutions can be used for independent work, paired discussion, self-assessment or quick teacher marking.

Ideal for KS3 and GCSE maths, maths literacy lessons, starters, plenaries, retrieval practice, graph revision, intervention, homework, cover lessons, tutoring, mixed-attainment classes, EAL learners and SEN support.

Part of the Beyond Printables Literacy in Maths Suite.
