Help your Grade 4 students master summarizing the way RL.4.2 and RI.4.2 actually ask for it: determine the theme or main idea and write a short summary in their own words. This complete unit teaches students to capture only what matters, briefly, for both stories and nonfiction.

Students learn to tell a summary from a retell, keep the key parts and cut the small ones, summarize a story with Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then, and summarize nonfiction with the main idea and key points. The keystone Summary Statement gives students one reusable habit that works on any text - a story tool and a nonfiction tool - so they write short, clear summaries in their own words.

WHAT IS INCLUDED
