This lesson contains:

  • An introduction to castle building and why William built them.
  • A discussion of where he built castles across England and how many he built.
  • An overview of the design and the way they looked. Students watch a video (included) that goes over the parts of a castle, and they complete their worksheet. they then use the information to add extra detail about each feature.
  • An additional YouTube video about the purpose of castles as a show of power.
  • A colour-coding task to show why castles were a way for William to gain power. This is followed by an opportunity to practice exam technique.
