This resource has been designed for students working towards Entry Level 2 Functional Skills English (Edexcel-Pearson, NCFE, City and Guilds, NOCN and Open Awards). It contains an age-appropriate, 26-page workbook and a 6-slide PowerPoint lesson on alphabetical order.

These resources will help pupils to achieve these outcomes:

sequence letters in alphabetical order
sequence words in alphabetical order by the first letter
use the first and second letter to sequence words in alphabetical order

Workbook

The 26-page workbook contains 4 explanation pages, 20 worksheets, a progress check, a certificate of achievement and answers on alphabetical order. The workbook is provided in PDF format and an editable PowerPoint version. It can be used for classwork, homework, revision or as an independent learning pack.

PowerPoint Lesson

The PowerPoint explains why alphabetical order is important. It demonstrates how to place words in alphabetical order to the first and second letter and provides many examples and opportunities for pupils to practise this skill. There are also tasks that involve pupils identifying where patients’ records can be found in a filing system and where CDs can be found in boxes. The PowerPoint contains a link to a short video on alphabetical order.

It is ideal for introducing pupils to the alphabetical order component of the specification and for revision purposes.
