Emotions and Feelings – Primary PSHE Lesson on Emotional Awareness and Self-Regulation

Description:
Help Primary pupils recognise, name, and express their feelings in healthy and positive ways with this engaging PSHE lesson on emotions and self-awareness. Through games, art, and creative discussion, children build emotional vocabulary, empathy, and strategies for managing big feelings.

Lesson Overview:
Starter Activity: Emotion Charades – Pupils act out different emotions for classmates to guess, helping them link body language and expression to feelings words.

Main Activities:
Create a Class Feelings Chart to display and name emotions
Paint or decorate Emotion Stones representing different feelings
Read and discuss stories about emotions (e.g., The Colour Monster)
Play Emotion Matching Games connecting faces with emotion words
Make a Feelings Thermometer craft to show the intensity of emotions
Body Mapping activity – pupils draw where they feel different emotions (e.g., butterflies in the tummy, warmth in the heart)
Classroom Culture: Reinforce that all feelings are valid and part of being human. Encourage expression in safe, kind, and constructive ways while distinguishing between feelings and behaviours.

Vocabulary check – can pupils identify and name a range of emotions?
