Give your K-2 readers hands-on practice with silent e (CVCe) words using these no-prep word-picture matching mats.

Each mat features a list of CVCe words alongside a grid of pictures. Students read each word, apply the silent e rule to decode it, then find the matching picture on the grid and record its location - turning word recognition into an active search-and-match challenge.

As a bonus, students also build early grid-reference and position/location skills by locating each answer using a letter-and-number coordinate (for example, column D, row 2) - great for reinforcing simple map-reading and coordinate skills alongside phonics practice.

Perfect for literacy centers, small groups, or independent practice, this activity reinforces long vowel, split digraph patterns and strengthens decoding skills in a format that’s engaging and easy to check.

Students will:

  • Read the CVCe word on the task card.
  • Scan the picture grid to find the matching image.
  • Find its location using the letter (column) and number (row)
  • Write the coordinate next to the word
  • Check their work against the provided answer cards.

This CVCe word-picture matching activity is ideal for boosting phonics fluency and reinforcing silent e patterns in a way that feels like a game, not a worksheet - with a built-in early map-skills bonus.

Plus, the no-prep, print-and-go format makes it simple to slot into any literacy block.
