Help Year 3 and Year 4 pupils join ideas clearly with this short, print-and-go worksheet on compound sentences and coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

A reminder box explains that a compound sentence joins two main clauses with a coordinating conjunction. Pupils then complete sentences using and, but, or and so, decide whether three sentences are compound, join three pairs of sentences, answer three multiple-choice questions and write a compound sentence about their weekend.

It revisits the Year 2 national curriculum focus on joining clauses with and, but and or, and supports Years 3 and 4 work on extending sentences with a range of conjunctions. It does not cover subordinating conjunctions or complex sentences.

What’s included (4 pages):

  • 1 colour cover page
  • Pupil page 1: Coordinating Conjunctions – reminder box, 6 fill-the-gap sentences and 3 yes/no questions
  • Pupil page 2: Combine the Sentences – 3 sentence-joining items, 3 multiple-choice questions and a numbered writing task (question 16)
  • Answer key with all 16 answers and accepted alternatives

Great for: grammar starters, SPaG practice, homework, early finishers or cover lessons. Print the black-and-white pupil pages and go.

Format: PDF, US Letter page size (prints on A4 with “fit to page).
