Cambridge A Level History Paper 3 is the Historical Interpretations paper – 40 marks, 1hr 15min, 20% of A Level. ONE question: “What can you learn from this extract about the interpretation and approach of the historian who wrote it?” Extract provided (up to 600 words). Author NOT named. AO1 (knowledge) = 50%, AO4 (interpretations) = 50%. This guide, updated May 2026, transforms how you analyse historians’ arguments.

What’s inside (39 pages):

5-step annotation technique – Identify overall interpretation (ONE sentence), pinpoint approach (intentionalist/structuralist/revisionist/post-revisionist), annotate priorities/omissions/language, contextualise with knowledge, evaluate why the historian holds that view. Never write sentence-by-sentence again.

4-level mark scheme (1–40 marks) – Level 4 requires sustained analysis of interpretation AND approach, knowledge used BOTH to support AND challenge, plus full engagement with historiographical context (when/where/why the historian wrote).

All 3 topics covered: Origins of WWI (Fischer, Clark, Taylor, intentionalism vs structuralism), The Holocaust (Dawidowicz, Broszat, Kershaw, Browning vs Goldhagen, intentionalism vs functionalism), Origins of Cold War (traditionalism vs revisionism vs post-revisionism, Gaddis, Williams, Zubok, new archival evidence post-1991).

Visual priority heatmap – CRITICAL debates (Fischer thesis, intentionalism/structuralism, traditionalism/revisionism/post-revisionism) most likely to appear.

Key historians reference – 15+ essential historians with core arguments, schools of thought, and exactly what to say in your answer.

Predicted question types – Intentionalist, revisionist, structuralist, synthesis extracts for each topic with what you must analyse and which historians to reference.

Worked model answers (Level 4) – WWI revisionist extract, Holocaust perpetrators extract, Cold War revisionist extract – full responses with examiner commentary showing why they score 35–40/40.
