Start Year 7 biology with a visual, colourful and ready-to-teach PowerPoint on cells and microscopy. Pupils learn the parts of a light microscope and a safe method for using it, then compare animal and plant cells and link the structure of specialised cells to their functions. Levels of organisation, from cell to organism, are taught clearly, and magnification is built up with worked examples and unit conversion between mm and micrometres. A misconceptions slide targets the errors that lose marks, and scientific drawing is taught explicitly. Two interactive, hands-on activities, observing onion cells and a magnification practice set, give real practice. Non-specialist friendly and ideal as a cover lesson, with a closing slide showing how the topic builds towards GCSE.
