A highly engaging lesson and investigation resource designed to help students apply their understanding of bond energies in a meaningful real-world context.

Students take on the role of fuel scientists working for a Fuel Research Division. Using bond energy data, they compare three candidate fuels (hydrogen, methane and methanol) to determine which fuel should be used to power a new reactor. Throughout the investigation, students analyse energy changes, compare fuel performance and use evidence to make a justified scientific recommendation.

The lesson moves beyond simple calculations by encouraging students to interpret data, evaluate evidence and make decisions using scientific reasoning.

Included
Full lesson PowerPoint
A3 investigative worksheet poster
A3 answer sheet
Fuel comparison task
Reactor code challenge
Independent and paired learning opportunities
Students will learn how to:
Apply bond energy calculations
Interpret exothermic reactions
Compare fuels using energy data
Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of different fuels
Justify scientific decisions using evidence
Develop analytical and problem-solving skills
