Brain Boss – Self-Monitoring: How Do I Know How I’m Doing?

A practical Executive Function lesson designed to help pupils develop self-monitoring skills and become more aware of how they are working, behaving and progressing towards a goal.

Many pupils can start a task but struggle to notice when they have lost focus, misunderstood instructions, made a mistake, stopped making progress or need to change their approach. This lesson teaches pupils that successful learners don’t simply keep going — they stop, notice, check and adjust.

Through relatable scenarios and practical activities, pupils learn to:

Understand what self-monitoring means.
Recognise clues that something isn’t working.
Check their progress during a task rather than only at the end.
Monitor their focus, effort, behaviour, emotions, progress and strategies.
Use mistakes and feedback as useful information.
Decide whether to keep going, stop and check, change something or ask for help.
Use the simple Brain Boss Self-Monitoring Toolkit independently.

The lesson uses the memorable Green – Amber – Red system and the 30-Second Check to give pupils strategies they can transfer into lessons, homework and everyday life.

Includes a supporting student workbook, practical activities, reflection, independent application and exit ticket.

Core message: CHECK. NOTICE. ADJUST.

This lesson works as a stand alone lesson or as lesson 8 in part of the Brain Boss Executive Function Skills series.
