Turn electron configuration into an exciting digital escape-room challenge! I created this interactive resource to help students practise the Bohr–Bury rules, electron shell filling, shell capacity, and electron configurations in a way that feels more like a mission than a worksheet.

Students are locked inside Dr. Bohr’s Lab and must successfully complete three rooms to escape:

The Shell Chamber – practise shell-filling order and the 2n² capacity rule.
The Configuration Lab – build electron configurations for Sodium, Silicon and Chlorine by filling shells interactively.
The Exception Vault – apply outer-shell and penultimate-shell rules to Potassium, Calcium and Iron.

Each correctly solved challenge reveals part of a door code. Students must use the codes to unlock each room, while hints and interactive feedback support independent learning. A built-in timer adds an element of challenge, and students receive a printable certificate of escape when they successfully complete the lab.

Why I use this resource

I designed this activity to make a topic that can sometimes become repetitive—electron shell configurations—more interactive, memorable and student-led. It works particularly well as a lesson starter, revision activity, consolidation task, early-finisher challenge or end-of-unit review.

Key features
Interactive, self-paced escape-room format
Grade 9 Chemistry focused
Covers Bohr–Bury electron shell filling
Includes MCQs and interactive atom-building tasks
Built-in hints and immediate feedback
Timer to add challenge and engagement
Three progressive levels/rooms
Printable completion certificate
Suitable for individual or pair work

A fun way to turn electron configuration practice into a chemistry mission!
