Teach taxes through a practical high school personal finance unit that takes students from understanding their first paycheck to preparing and defending a complete tax return. Unit 5: Taxes gives students repeated practice with financial math, payroll taxes, income taxes, W-4 withholding, tax returns, spreadsheets, realistic scenarios, data analysis, and evidence-based decision-making.

Important: This listing includes the complete teacher resource collection for all six units, while the student component is Unit 5: Taxes. The 102-page student book covers Weeks 25–30 of the 36-week Grades 9–12 curriculum.

Each week follows a consistent 11-part structure: opener, original reading, comprehension, vocabulary, financial math, data analysis, case study, hands-on activity, spreadsheet modeling, argument writing, and review.

Students begin by analyzing pay structures, including hourly, salary, tipped, and commission income. They calculate overtime, gross pay, regular rates, and examine employee versus contractor classification through a Pay Calculation Audit.

The payroll taxes lesson covers FICA, Social Security, Medicare, wage bases, employer contributions, self-employment tax, and tax incidence. Students calculate effective rates and build payroll tax models.

Students then learn the five-step income-tax process from gross income through adjustments, deductions, tax brackets, and credits. They compare standard and itemized deductions, distinguish deductions from credits, and address the misconception that all income is taxed at a higher rate when someone enters a higher bracket.

The W-4 lesson focuses on withholding, multiple jobs, extra withholding, estimated taxes, safe harbors, and year-to-date withholding. Students analyze realistic two-job scenarios and calculate withholding adjustments.

Students then explore Form 1040, schedules, e-filing, extensions, amended returns, audits, documentation, and record keeping. They prepare a simplified return and examine why an extension provides more time to file, not more time to pay.

The unit culminates in a Complete Return Simulation. Students work with W-2s, 1099 forms, interest income, student loan interest, business expenses, and planted errors. They prepare a return, reconcile figures to source documents, identify errors, and recommend withholding changes.

Key activities include Pay Calculation Audit, Payroll Tax Investigation, Tax Calculation Sequence Lab, Withholding Tuning Lab, Return Preparation Simulation, and Complete Return Simulation.

Students develop tax literacy, financial math, spreadsheet modeling, critical thinking, document analysis, and evidence-based decision-making skills. Alignment includes CEE, Jump$tart, and Common Core mathematics and ELA standards.

This unit makes taxes practical by moving students through the complete financial journey: paycheck, payroll taxes, income tax, withholding, filing, and return reconciliation.
