This full lesson talks students through the poem Waiting for the Barbarians by Constantine Cavafy, treating this as an unseen poem as found in AQA GCSE English. It could easily be adapted for other exam boards. The lesson starts by getting them to identify the volta in the poem, then gets them to analyse it, producing a thesis statement and then exploring the poem. Because this lesson is getting students used to the ideas behind unseen poetry, and exam boards attempt to give them poetry they can relate to their own lives, this lesson also gets students to discuss where they may have seen the themes of the poem in their modern world (it is from the 1800s.) At the end there is an exemplar paragraph, but this is just about some themes from the opening of the poem.
