This resource contains two complete lessons covering infection prevention and control (IPC), hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), healthcare waste, spillages, cleaning and safe clinical application for the T Level Health – Adult Nursing Occupational Specialism, providing approximately 8–10 hours of teaching.

Lesson 1 – Hand Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment

Students develop an understanding of infection prevention and control and how safe IPC practice protects patients, staff and others. They explore how infections are transmitted, healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs), professional personal hygiene, the WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene, effective handwashing techniques, PPE selection and the safe use and removal of PPE. Learning is reinforced through realistic healthcare scenarios and practical classroom activities.

Lesson 1 includes:

  • L1 Slide 35 Clinical Scenarios – PPE Selection Practice Cards
  • PPE selection scenarios covering wound dressing, C. difficile, suspected influenza and blood sampling
  • Teacher answers and guidance included within the PowerPoint speaker notes

Lesson 2 – Waste, Spillages, Cleaning and Clinical Application

Students develop their understanding of safe healthcare waste management, waste segregation, sharps and medication waste, blood and body-fluid spillages, non-hazardous spillages and hazardous chemical spillages. They also explore cleaning, sanitisation and disinfection and apply IPC procedures to realistic clinical situations while considering patient safety and dignity. Learning is reinforced through practical stations, scenario-based activities and applied clinical tasks.

Lesson 2 includes:

  • L2 Slide 20 Practical 4 Spillage Management Practical Stations

  • L2 Slide 20 Practical 4 Spillage Response Simulation Answers

  • Three practical spillage stations covering:

    • Blood or body-fluid spillage
    • Non-hazardous liquid spillage
    • Hazardous chemical spillage
  • L2 Slide 37 Practical Assessment Scenarios Answers

  • Practical clinical scenarios covering wound dressing, supporting a patient who is vomiting, cleaning shared clinical equipment, responding to a blood spillage and assisting a patient in isolation
