AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unit 2A: In this lesson we examine how urban growth in Rio has created social opportunities.

We start with a multiple-choice starter based upon the introduction to Rio lesson previously taught. We then start by looking at some development indicators to help understand what impact urban growth is having on standard of living and quality of life. The students play a game of higher or lower. We reveal a development indicator for the city of Rio and the students have to guess whether that indicator is higher or lower for the country of Brazil. We then record these indicators in our books. We then look at access to the four essential services in Rio (education, health services, water and energy). The students have a large A3 sheet with a variety of activities to complete on the four essential services.

We finish with 6 mark GCSE-style question and the students have some tips and guidance on how to answer it if required. The students use some of the information on their A3 worksheet to help them answer this question.

Hope this saves you some valuable planning time.
