I teach IGCSE Geography at an international school in Southeast Asia. This was one of my best-selling lessons, and it is the one students push back on: if ice ages came and went long before us, why blame humans now? So I rebuilt it from scratch for 2026: the evidence sections rewritten around what geographers actually measure, the CO2 and temperature data refreshed to 2024, and a new Deep-Time Concertina task that zooms from 66 million years ago to this decade. What鈥檚 in it:
A complete, ready-to-teach lesson on the history of global warming, built around one big question: how do we know the Earth鈥檚 climate has changed, and why is today鈥檚 warming different? You get a full PowerPoint presentation with answers included throughout

What students learn:

  • How and why the Earth鈥檚 climate has changed naturally over geological time
  • The vocabulary of geological time: era, period, epoch, glacial and interglacial
  • The four kinds of evidence geographers use to reconstruct past climates
  • How ice cores and ocean sediments preserve past temperature and CO2
  • What the Medieval Climate Anomaly, the Little Ice Age and the Industrial Revolution did to the climate story
  • How to compare natural climate change with recent human-enhanced warming, and why the rate is the difference

The data is refreshed to the latest available figures: CO2 at a record 422.8 ppm in 2024, roughly 51% above pre-industrial levels, and 2024 as the warmest year on record. Sources are named on the slides (NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, NASA GISS, IPCC AR6) and the qualifiers are kept honest, including treating the Medieval Climate Anomaly as a regional warm phase rather than a globally uniform one. Also suitable for AP Human Geography, World Geography, and any climate change, weather and climate, or physical geography unit at ages 11-16.
