Final writing outcome

A small collection (three poems) of subversive-comic poems in the style of Stevie Smith, each gently overturning a familiar story or saying. Pupils experiment with the unreliable narrator-voice, the comic-serious register, and the dry parenthetical aside.

• Relative clauses with relative pronouns (who, which, whose, that, where) and omitted relative pronouns.
• Modal verbs (might, could, should, must, would) to express degrees of possibility, doubt and obligation.

Themes explored

The comic-serious — being funny and sincere at the same time, the gentle subversion of fairy tales and other inherited stories, the unreliable narrator-voice and the speaker who is not quite sure, religion and doubt held lightly, without anger, the dignity of small, ordinary, slightly ridiculous lives.
