Teach supermarket shopping with an age-respectful SEN life skills pack: planning, budgeting, checkout, cash, card and phone payments.

Shopping Independently: Planning, Choosing & Paying - Teacher Edition is an English-language, 190-page A4 PDF for classroom teaching, role-play and carefully supported community practice. It continues the everyday communication approach of Eating Out Independently and can also be used on its own.

Six teaching modules

  1. Plan What I Need: check what is available, work out quantities and prepare a photo, object or written list.
  2. Find & Choose: use supermarket sections, check item/brand/size and consider an agreed Plan B when stock changes.
  3. Compare & Check My Budget: compare pack prices and supplied unit prices, keep a running total and adjust a basket.
  4. Use the Checkout & Pay: rehearse staffed tills and self-checkout, then practise cash, card and phone payment routines, including confirmation of the result.
  5. Check & Put It Right: use receipts, check change and ask for help with different prices, duplicate scans or unclear/declined payments.
  6. My Full Shopping Visit: link selected steps in a classroom shop or supported visit, then review one useful next step.

Reusable communication and practical additions

  • Photographic “I need to buy…â€ and “I need help with…â€ boards, reduced-choice options and personal templates.
  • Real food-to-pack recognition and space for familiar product and local shelf photos.
  • Pack-condition and fictional use-by date practice, with adult checks and answer guidance.
  • Member-price conditions, multibuy choices, bag costs and packing without squashing.
  • Ready-to-show and personalised staff communication cards.
  • Putting-away routines, label-based practice and a personal home storage plan.

Access and teaching support

Four flexible access routes span Early KS1, KS1, Early KS2 and KS2 task demands. These are teacher planning routes, not age labels or four separate versions of every page. Materials are designed to respect older learners, including secondary SEN learners working within these skill ranges.

Choose access separately for communication, reading, number and practical handling. Pointing, eye gaze, AAC, signs, objects, speech and adult recording are valid. Adult guidance includes whiteboard modelling, session and supported-visit planning, observation records, review and teacher/TA handover. Help, more time, refusal, a break and a safe stop remain available.

Exactly what you receive

One static, bookmarked PDF with 190 pages: 3 introduction/navigation pages; an 18-page Adult Toolkit; 125 pages across six teaching modules; an 18-page Choice Boards section; and 26 pages of Practical Shopping Additions. The total includes adult guidance, answers and source credits, as well as learner activities and templates.
