Help children build stronger sentences one step at a time with this practical set of visual sentence-building cards.

I created these cards to give children something they can actually see, move and refer back to while they are learning how sentences are put together. Rather than expecting children to remember lots of grammar terminology at once, the cards allow you to introduce each element gradually, starting with a subject and verb, then adding more detail as children become confident.

These cards also work alongside my sentence-building intervention booklets, which use the same step-by-step approach. Please see my store for the accompanying resources.

The cards are particularly useful for First Grade, Second Grade (US) and KS1/Years 1–2 (UK), as well as children who need a little more structure and visual support with their writing.

You can use them for whole-class modelling, small-group intervention, sentence-building activities, independent writing support, or simply keep the larger cards displayed as a visual reminder.

Subject

One clause

Three printing options are included

I know every classroom works differently, so the pupil cards are provided in three different styles:

Full-colour cards
Coloured-background cards with simple outline images
Black-outline cards, ideal for printing onto coloured paper and saving ink
There is also a larger teacher set which can be used for modelling sentences with the whole class or displaying on your working wall.

Ways to use the cards

Use them during:

Sentence-building lessons
Writing interventions
Morning work
Small-group teaching
Whole-class modelling
Writing conferences
Independent writing
Home learning or homeschool
Children can physically select the cards they need, place them in order and use them as a visual checklist while they write.

The idea is simple: start small and add one element at a time to build confident writers. Children can begin by securing a clear subject and verb, knowing this is a clause, before gradually developing their sentences with objects, adjectives, adverbials, conjunctions and additional detail to form complex or compound sentences.

A flexible resource that you can return to again and again as your children’s writing develops.

Perfect for: First Grade • Second Grade • KS1 • Early Writers • Reluctant Writers • Writing Intervention • Visual Learners • Sentence Structure Support for EAL/ ESL students.
