KS3 Rugby – Lessons 3 & 4
Keeping Rugby Simple: Introduction to Rucking & Controlled Contact

This 2-lesson KS3 rugby block builds directly on Lessons 1 & 2, introducing students to rucking and controlled contact in a safe, structured, and non-intimidating way.

Designed specifically for non-specialist teachers and non-specialist students, these lessons keep rugby simple, clear, and progressive, with a strong emphasis on decision-making, safety, and consistency.

Important:
Tackling technique is not taught in detail in this block.
Students should already be familiar with safe tackle technique.
If not, use MrSportandPE – Safe Tackle Technique Unit before delivering Lesson 4.

What’s Included in Lessons 3 & 4
Lesson 3 – Introduction to the Ruck (1v1)

Students are introduced to rucking in a controlled, non-chaotic environment.

Students learn:

What a ruck is and when it happens

How good ball presentation allows rucking to take place

How to enter a ruck legally and safely

The FAST principle (First, Aggressive, Shortest route, Take away)

Why body position and speed matter more than strength

Includes:

Standard touch primer

Handling reinforcement (pillar drill)

1v1 ruck activities in small spaces

Clear entry rules and safety cues

Non-doer / observer task

Assessment grid (Working Towards / Expected / Exceeding)

Lesson 4 – Shot to Stop (Controlled Tackle to Ruck)

This lesson carefully links controlled tackling to ruck decision-making.

Students learn:

How to approach contact safely from a static start

How tackling and rucking connect in game situations

When to compete at a ruck

When to stay out and create a defensive line

Key feature:

Execute a controlled 1v1 tackle on command

Progress into a competitive ruck
