IB Math AI SL 5.1 – Limits, Rate of Change & Derivatives (Student + Teacher Notes)

These notes build an intuitive foundation for calculus by exploring limits as the values a function approaches, including at points where the function is undefined. Students then connect gradients of lines to average rates of change on curves, using secant lines as a bridge to instantaneous rate of change and the derivative.

Structured notes and guided examples introduce the difference quotient, limit notation and standard derivative notation. An optional extension explores the formal definition of a limit, supporting deeper conceptual understanding alongside core IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL content.

Pair the student and teacher notes with the lesson presentation and practice worksheet:

If you are after clean and concise notes as well as excellent lessons. Then this page is for you. Mark is a blessing in the IB community, especially IB AI HL where resources are limited when compared to A-level or IB AA. I appreciate all the resources put out by Mark and highly reccomment you check them out if you teach IB.
