This lesson contains:

  • An introduction to the Harrying with an evocative image that shows the destruction. Students are then introduced to the background and reminded of the origins of the 1069 revolt. Then, the students watch a You Tube video about the Harrying which sets the scene about what happened.
  • A main task to study a series of sources. Students then stick the map of the Harrying into their books, then annotate it with the main facts about it, the devastation, where it happened, what was affected and the major consequences etc.
  • An activity to look back at the actual causes of the Harrying. Students will use the teacher-led info on the board to complete this.
  • A final task to study the impacts of the Harrying in the short and long term.
  • There is exam practice at the end of the lesson as optional.
