Disciplinary literacy activity based on the famous story of Archimedes and his “Eureka! moment: using water displacement to find volume, and then density, of an irregular object. Build KS4 student’s scientific reading and literacy skills while covering Density of Materials on the AQA Combined Science (6.3.1.1) and Separate Physics (4.3.1.1) specifications. The task links directly to the density required practical activity (Combined RP17, Separate RP5), giving students the historical origin of the method they will use in the lab and assessed on in AQA paper 1.

The illustrated 750-word article has an approximate age of 13 to 14 and is designed for mixed abilities. A glossary and a range of ten questions from foundation level 1 recall to level 3 higher-tier evaluation support and challenge every student. The density equation =m÷V is also introduced and defined, with a consolidation calculation and data question to deduce if a crown is pure gold, following in Archimedes’ footsteps.

Use in class during the Particle Model topic, or as flipped learning to introduce density prior to teaching. Could also be effective homework, cover work or used as part of a revision or intervention session.
