AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is analyse the rise of the Duke of Northumberland to power.

Students work through a clear timeline of Northumberland’s life and key political decisions, before analysing a range of historian interpretations to deepen their understanding of his leadership.

They also complete a competitive multiple‑choice quiz on the succession crisis and Northumberland’s attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne, helping them grasp both his strategy and his political miscalculations.

The lesson Includes selected historian quotations for students to analyse, evaluate and ultimately decide which interpretation of Northumberland’s rule is the most convincing.

The lesson concludes with a comparative plenary examining Somerset and Northumberland, encouraging students to identify the contrasting styles and outcomes of the two Dukes.
