This lesson introduces students to biological explanations of gender development, exploring how chromosomes and hormones may influence behaviour as well as physical development. The lesson begins with a thought-provoking starter asking students whether traits like competitiveness or nurturing behaviour could be shaped by biology, leading into key theoretical assumptions.

Core AO1 knowledge is delivered through clear explanations of sex chromosomes (XX/XY) and the role of hormones including testosterone, oestrogen and oxytocin in shaping gender-related behaviour. Key research is embedded throughout, including Young et al. (1964), Berenbaum & Hines (1992), and Goddings et al. (2012), helping students link theory to evidence.

Understanding is reinforced through fast-paced mini whiteboard hinge questions targeting common misconceptions about hormones and behaviour.

Students develop AO2 application skills through engaging real-world scenarios, including the Batista children case study and the case of David Reimer, with model answers provided to support exam technique and application.

AO3 evaluation is explicitly taught using structured PEEL paragraphs, covering strengths such as chromosomal and hormonal evidence, alongside limitations including weak evidence for oestrogen, reliance on animal studies, and reductionism. Students consolidate this through true/false checks and guided evaluation tasks.

The lesson concludes with essay-writing skill development, where students complete PEEL paragraphs, followed by a dilemma-style debate on whether biological explanations of gender can be trusted given limitations in the evidence.
