This three-lesson pack explores the Product element of the marketing mix, taking students through the Product Life Cycle, Boston Matrix and New Product Development (NPD). The lessons combine accessible theory with real-world business examples, application tasks, discussion and AQA-style exam practice.

Lesson 1 introduces the Product Life Cycle, exploring introduction, growth, maturity and decline and how sales, costs and profits can change as a product moves through its life. Students consider why some products become obsolete while others survive for decades, before examining extension strategies businesses can use to prolong a product’s life. Learning is applied through a PlayStation 5 case study and AQA-style 6-mark analyse question, complete with structured K–Ap–An guidance and peer assessment.

Lesson 2 develops students’ understanding of product portfolio analysis through the Boston Matrix. Students learn to distinguish between Stars, Cash Cows, Question Marks and Dogs, consider the investment implications of each category and make links between the Boston Matrix and Product Life Cycle. Interactive portfolio activities and a marketing-mix challenge encourage students to move beyond simply identifying categories and instead use the model to support business decisions.

Lesson 3 focuses on New Product Development (NPD), examining why businesses innovate and the stages involved from idea generation and screening through to development, testing and launch. Students assess the potential benefits of NPD, including first-mover advantage and increased competitiveness, alongside risks such as high R&D costs, lengthy development times and product failure. The Amazon Fire Phone provides an engaging real-world context for a 9-mark assess question, followed by peer assessment, improvement tasks and a class debate on whether businesses should launch quickly or risk competitors getting there first.
