A PPT designed for use in a 10 English unit who have studied the novel The Outsiders in the previous term and now are using it as inspiration for a creative writing assignment (either a gap/silence short story or a series of journal entries from the perspective of a character other than Ponyboy).

There are some reminder slides about the various characters from The Outsiders that the students could choose from.

Student tasks:

  1. Select a character
  2. Make a list of your characters values, attitudes and beliefs
  3. Make a list of events that they are present for in the original text
  4. Choose a specific event and re read that section of the novel making note of:
    o Things Ponyboy tells you about what that character says / does.
    o Potential gaps or silences that you could fill in the diary entry.

Fast finisher tasks:
5. do a brainstorm of some language features and text structures for diary entry 1.
6. consider what diary entry 2 will be about
7. consider what diary entry 3 will be about
