A complete Year 8 Food Preparation and Nutrition lesson and summative assessment package covering protein requirements, protein sources, HBV/LBV proteins, essential amino acids, complementary proteins, plant proteins and nutritional needs.

Designed as the final lesson in a KS3 protein unit, students apply their previous learning to different target groups including children, teenagers, athletes, vegetarians and older adults before completing an independent 25-mark Protein & Nutrition Summative Assessment.

The lesson uses engaging case studies, discussion, nutritional decision-making and AfL activities to develop students’ ability to move beyond simply identifying protein foods and instead select, analyse and justify appropriate food choices for different nutritional needs.

Teaching on factors affecting protein needs and choices
Child, teenager, athlete, vegetarian and older-adult case studies

Assessment structure
Part A – Knowledge: 10 marks
Assesses protein functions, essential amino acids, HBV/LBV proteins, pulses, complementary proteins, adolescence and plant protein choices.
Part B – Application: 10 marks
Students apply their nutritional knowledge to Samira, a 14-year-old vegetarian who plays netball, recommending and explaining appropriate protein foods and a balanced lunch.
Part C – Analyse & Justify: 5 marks
Students compare three possible meals and use protein and balanced-nutrition knowledge to make and justify an appropriate recommendation.

The accompanying mark scheme provides clear marking guidance, acceptable responses, an indicative full-mark response and descriptors for the extended analysis question, supporting consistent departmental marking and standardisation.

Suitable for:
Year 8 | KS3 Food Technology | Food Preparation and Nutrition | Protein | Nutrition | End-of-unit assessment | Curriculum assessment

The assessment has been designed to provide more than a single total score. Teachers can record students’ performance separately across knowledge, application and analysis/justification, making it useful for identifying gaps, informing future teaching and supporting departmental assessment/data collection.
