These practical resources are designed to help English departments explore the proposed Northern Ireland Curriculum 2028 without feeling they need to rewrite existing provision from scratch. They are examples that I have compiled and structured in order to aid understanding and provide a starting point. AI was used for effective presentation and for arranging information onto A3 sheets.

  1. The Spiral Curriculum fact sheet explains how proposed key knowledge and concepts can be introduced, revisited and deepened across KS3, creating clearer progression towards GCSE.

  2. Curriculum Conversation Starter for the ‘Story’ lens and Year 8 novel.
This could be used for a departmental meeting alongside the FREE posters on my page. Again, this is a starting point to help frame curriculum discussions.

  3. Curriculum Audit for ‘Story’ (use a selected novel and/or scheme)
The Six Lenses Curriculum Audit supports departments in reviewing where Pattern, Story, Argument, Metaphor, Grammar and Context already appear within current schemes and identifying manageable areas for development.
I have created one for a Year 8 novel as a starting point.

  4. Effective Questioning across all Six Lenses (102 questions)
Finally, worked KS3 and GCSE text examples demonstrate how the six lenses can interact through effective questioning, showing how pupils can move from identification towards deeper analysis, interpretation and evaluation. Hyperlinks for key terms are also included for Of Mice and Men via BBC Bitesize.
(Texts: Of Mice and Men and Private Peaceful - blank template available on request via email)

  5. A Year 9 Motif Classroom Poster
This is an example of a series of visual aids and posters that will be compiled using supporting and appropriate texts I have taught and sampled for Year 9.

  6. KS3 Planning Template (Metaphor lens)
Again, this is something I thought would help generate discussions and is a catch all with some suggested approaches, key terms, questions to ask in your department and perhaps some ways to sequence the learning.

Together, the resources provide a practical starting point for departmental discussion, curriculum auditing and planning for progression. Enlarge them to A1 or A3 or project onto the screen and discuss them. Hope they help ease some concerns for the new school year!
