This lesson resource was created to support students studying The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin as part of the Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (4EA1) qualification. The lesson focuses on developing the analytical reading and writing skills required for success in the examination, using the June 2018 examination question as a framework for exploring characterisation, language, structure, and theme.

Students investigate the character of Louise Mallard while exploring key ideas surrounding freedom, marriage, identity, and societal expectations. The lesson is designed to move students beyond simple comprehension towards thoughtful literary analysis and structured exam responses.

Though it was designed with the exam in mind, the resource could easily be used or adapted for teaching The Story of an Hour as a coursework text.

Lesson Sequence:

  • Starter – Which Would You Choose? Students debate whether they would prefer lifelong happiness in marriage or complete personal freedom, introducing the story’s central conflict.
  • Context Introduction: Students learn about Kate Chopin, the social expectations placed upon women in the nineteenth century, and the story’s exploration of marriage and independence.
  • First Reading: Students annotate Louise’s thoughts, actions, relationships, and surprising moments throughout the story.
  • Exam Question Introduction: Students explore the June 2018 examination question and break down exactly what examiners are asking them to analyse.
  • Character Tracking Activity: By colour coding their texts, students gather and categorise evidence presenting Louise as a grieving wife, a liberated woman, or a complex and conflicted character by.
  • Discussion / Mini Debate: Students consider whether Louise should be viewed negatively, using textual evidence to support their views.
  • Structure Analysis: Students track Louise’s emotional journey from grief to liberation and finally shock, considering why Chopin structures the story in this way.
  • Exam Planning Task: Students use a structured planning sheet (provided) to organise three analytical paragraphs before writing.
  • Exemplar Analysis: Students examine a model paragraph to identify effective use of quotation, language analysis, structural comments, and links to the question.
  • Analytical Writing: Students write a focused paragraph responding to the examination question using evidence from their plan.
  • Plenary Debate: Students revisit the question of whether Louise is a bad person and justify their views using textual evidence.
