Phoneme sorts tell students WHAT sound a word has. Grapheme sorts ask the harder question: HOW is that sound spelled? That distinction is the whole point of this product — and it’s what makes it a true orthographic mapping activity, not just a phoneme awareness game.

WHAT STUDENTS DO

Students pick up a word card, say the word aloud, identify the target sound, and then decide which grapheme spelling that word uses. They place the card under the correct column on the sort mat. Then they complete a recording sheet to write the words in the correct column independently. The sort mat stays on the desk; the word cards travel across it. Every word card has the target grapheme highlighted in color so students see the pattern in the word — not just the word itself.

This product sorts by SPELLING — students look at the word and decide which grapheme pattern is being used.
