Celebrate Recycle Week from 22–28 September with this engaging, ready-to-deliver whole-school assembly for primary schools.

This assembly explores how we can take better care of our school, our homes and our planet by thinking carefully about what we use and what we throw away. Pupils are introduced to the three key ideas of reduce, reuse and recycle, while learning that recycling is also about making thoughtful choices about resources.

Through the story of Oak Class, pupils become “Recycle Detectives” and discover how small changes — such as reusing scrap paper, bringing reusable bottles and sorting waste carefully — can reduce the amount a school throws away.

The presentation includes an interactive recycling sorting challenge, where pupils decide whether different everyday items should be recycled, reused, reduced or checked first. It also encourages children to remember that recycling rules can vary between schools and local councils, so checking when unsure is important.

The assembly finishes with a whole-school challenge encouraging pupils to reduce what they can, reuse what they can, recycle what they can and sort it correctly, with a focus on how small actions can add up to something powerful.
