Make phonics, counting and colour learning a little more fun with this playful Puff Out the Candles! worksheet. Children can colour the pig cake and candles before practicing the fun action of blowing out the candles.
Phonics – /p/ Sound
This worksheet can be used to consolidate the /p/ sound. The pig provides a clear visual connection to the sound, and teachers can introduce or review other /p/ words such as pig, pink, puff, party and puff out.
Encourage children to say the words aloud as they colour and practice the /p/ sound together.
Counting
With six candles on the cake, the worksheet is also a simple way to practice counting. Ask children to count the candles, touch each one as they count, or answer questions such as:
• How many candles are there?
• Can you count them?
• How many candles are left after we blow out one?
Colours
The candles can also be used to consolidate colour vocabulary. Ask children to choose different colours for their candles or give specific instructions such as “Colour two candles red” or “Colour the pig pink.”
Add Some Sparkle!
For an extra special effect, children can glue shiny paper, old wrapping paper or sweet wrappers onto the candle flames. This is a lovely way to reuse leftover materials while making the flames sparkle and stand out.
A Fun Speaking & Breath Activity
The final step encourages children to practice puffing out the candles, making the worksheet more interactive than a traditional colouring activity. This provides an enjoyable opportunity to practice vocabulary, follow simple instructions and develop controlled blowing skills.
A simple colouring worksheet becomes a fun phonics, maths, colour and fine-motor activity all in one!
