The lesson begins with a relatable starter exploring why trying to be “good” with food can sometimes lead to overeating, immediately engaging students in the real-world relevance of obesity psychology. Core AO1 knowledge is delivered through clear explanations of restraint theory, disinhibition, the ‘what the hell’ effect, and the boundary model, supported by diagrams, everyday examples, and accessible language.

Understanding is checked through fast-paced mini whiteboard questions and retrieval tasks that target common misconceptions. Students then apply their knowledge through structured AO2 exam-style scenarios (e.g. stress, comfort eating, dieting rules), supported by model answers that demonstrate how to integrate theory into context.

AO3 evaluation is developed using scaffolded PEEL paragraphs, key research (e.g. Wardle & Beales, Savage et al., Boyce & Kuijer, Provencher et al.), MCQs, and a dilemma-style debate on whether strict dieting should be encouraged despite risks of disinhibition. The lesson concludes with exam practice, peer assessment (WWW/EBI), kahoot quiz, scrabble game and a reflective plenary linking theory to real-world health advice.
