Ordering Negative Numbers is a complete Year 7 Core Maths PowerPoint lesson for the Number Sense strand. Pupils will be able to locate, compare and order integers, including negative numbers, using number line position and inequality notation.

This standalone, print-free lesson is supplied as an editable PowerPoint with all questions, examples, diagrams and answers included on screen. No worksheet is required.

The lesson begins with a six-question retrieval starter to activate prerequisite skills such as ascending order, decimal comparison, integer difference, opposites and number line interval size. Key vocabulary is then revisited, including negative integer, opposite, ascending and descending, followed by a representation slide showing how position on a number line determines size.

The teaching sequence is built around I Do–We Do–You Do. In the I Do section, teacher modelling makes the method and reasoning visible: pupils see how to locate a negative integer, compare by position and order mixed positive and negative integers. In the We Do section, guided examples allow supported practice and checking through temperature and mixed-order contexts before pupils move towards independence.

The You Do section contains carefully sequenced minimally different practice covering comparisons, greatest and smallest values, ascending and descending order, opposites and inequalities. It also includes staged Developing, Secure and Greater Depth practice plus a Super Challenge for pupils ready to reason more deeply.

AFL mini-whiteboard questions check understanding throughout, including symbol choice, missing integers, context matching, reverse conditions and always/sometimes/never reasoning. Misconception slides target common errors such as treating the larger digit as the larger negative number and assuming every positive number is closer to zero than every negative number.

The lesson finishes with problem solving, application, a challenge task, three exam-style questions with mark guidance and an exit check. Complete answers and worked solutions are provided throughout, so the resource can be used immediately as a classroom-ready Core lesson.
