A fully resourced OCR A Level Geography lesson exploring why anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions have increased since the pre-industrial era. Students investigate the roles of fossil fuels, electricity generation, transport, agriculture, deforestation and land-use change, consumption and population growth, while distinguishing between CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O. A key strength of the lesson is its emphasis on synoptic thinking: rather than learning factors in isolation, students construct causal chains before creating a concept mind map that links drivers such as industrialisation, economic growth, energy demand, agriculture, transport and changing consumption. The synoptic task explicitly develops students’ ability to identify direct and indirect connections, label relationships and recognise how factors influence one another helping them move beyond simple cause-and-effect towards the interconnected thinking required at A Level. The lesson concludes with an OCR-style 8-mark question, structured guidance, a model response and exit-ticket assessment.
