The aim of this lesson is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Nazi economy and evaluate how successful Hitler’s economic policies were in improving Germany between 1933 and 1939.

Students begin by exploring the apparent successes of the Nazi economy, using contemporary video footage, Goebbels’ propaganda and economic evidence to investigate the dramatic fall in unemployment.

They also examine schemes such as Strength Through Joy (KdF) and consider how these policies were designed to improve the lives of ordinary Germans.

However, students are challenged to look beyond Nazi propaganda and question whether the economic recovery was as successful as the Nazis claimed. They investigate the Four Year Plan, led by Hermann Göring, and the Nazi policy of autarky. Students consider the problems created by rearmament, shortages and the need to prepare Germany for war.

A further investigation into the Home Front provides evidence of the pressures facing German society and helps students recognise the weaknesses and contradictions within Nazi economic policy.

Students then create their own evidence chart, analysing and scrutinising the evidence before reaching their own judgement about whether the Nazis genuinely achieved economic success.

The lesson concludes with a GCSE practice question focusing on which groups in German society were most affected by Nazi economic policies. A self- and peer-assessment activity is included to help students mark their responses and understand how to improve their answers.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and develop a supported historical judgement about the success of the Nazi economy.

This 9-lesson bundle is the third and final part in a complete series of resources I have created for AQA GCSE 9–1 Germany 1890–1945: Democracy and Dictatorship. Designed specifically for the AQA GCSE History specification, this bundle provides a structured teaching sequence covering the Nazi economy, Hitler Youth, the role of women, the Churches, Nazi persecution, the Nuremberg Laws, Kristallnacht, the Final Solution, opposition to the Nazis and life on the German Home Front during the Second World War. The lessons combine detailed contextual knowledge with regular GCSE examination practice, helping students develop the skills required to achieve the highest grades. Rather than simply learning the content, students are repeatedly challenged to explain, analyse, evaluate and reach substantiated judgements. The lessons will allow students to demonstrate (AO1) knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the period studied, from the Hitler Youth and Nazi economic policies to the treatment of different groups in Nazi Germany and life during the Second World War. They will study (AO2) second-order concepts such as change and continuity in the role of women under Nazi rule, how Nazi policies transformed people's lives, and the causes and consequences of the Final Solution. The analysis and evaluation of sources (AO3) are developed through activities such as those included in the Nuremberg Laws and Kristallnacht lesson, while substantiated judgements (AO4) are developed through questions examining how far the Nazis controlled the Churches in Germany and the effectiveness of opposition to Nazi rule. The lessons are designed to be engaging, challenging and enquiry-based, with a key question introduced at the start of each lesson using a lightbulb enquiry question and revisited throughout the lesson to demonstrate students' progress in learning.
