Students examine the development in methods to diagnose, treat and prevent lung cancer in the UK with a focus on the role of advances in science and technology

  • Slide 3-4: Lung Cancer Fact Quiz - A simple statistics/fact based quiz to help students understand the significance of lung cancer in modern society. Answers included.
  • Slide 5: Starter Discussion - What methods can the government use to stop people from smoking?
  • Slide 6: Source analysis - Students are shown a graph which outlines cases of smoking and cases of lung cancer from c.1900 - 2010 and have to infer information from it.
  • Slide 7: Background information covering what cancer is and how it impacts the body.
  • Slide 8: Background information covering how smoking became common and fashionable in the early part of the 20th century.
  • Slide 9: Background information covering the government鈥檚 reaction to the link between smoking and lung cancer.
  • Slide 10: Background information covering passive smoking.
  • Slide 11-12: Task 1 - Students sort through the many actions that the government have taken to stop people from smoking. Includes printable worksheet.
  • Slide 13: Task 2 - A worksheet for students to write on while using the information from the lesson and the lesson fact sheet.
