Celebrate International Day of Democracy on 15 September with this engaging, ready-to-deliver whole-school assembly for primary schools.

This assembly introduces pupils to the idea that everyone should have a voice, exploring what democracy can look like in everyday school life. Children learn about voting, listening to different opinions, taking turns, fairness, respect and accepting decisions even when the outcome is not what they hoped for.

Pupils explore how democracy is about more than simply voting. The presentation connects democracy to the fundamental British value of democracy, highlighting examples children may already see in school, such as school council elections, class votes, eco teams, house captains and shared class rules.

Through the story of a Year 4 class choosing between two activities, pupils see how a fair decision-making process can give everyone an opportunity to speak and help people accept the final result respectfully.

The presentation includes an interactive mini democratic vote, audience questions and a reflection encouraging pupils to listen, include others, disagree respectfully and make fair choices.
