Students investigate the characteristics of naval warfare, tactics, weapons and technology in Elizabethan England with an additional focus on Drake鈥檚 raid on Cadiz in 1587.

An 18 slide fully resourced lesson containing warm up & learning review activities, a choice of tasks, printable resources and a printable knowledge organiser with all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2-5: Warm Up - A fun personality quiz for students to find out if they would make a suitable Elizabethan sailor. Printable question sheet, points tally and results chart included.
  • Slide 6-7: Recap - A recap of the main reasons for England鈥檚 tension and conflict with Spain using a 6 sentence gap full. Answers included.
  • Slide 8: Starter Discussion - Why was the navy so important to Elizabeth and England? Contains the main reasons for the importance of the navy with additional challenge question.
  • Slide 9: Starter Source - Students study the Armada Portrait and focus on what it can tell us about Elizabeth鈥檚 relationship with the Navy and the sea.
  • Slide 10: Task 1 - Students use the knowledge organiser to write out one fact to link with each of the ten key terms from the lesson.
  • Slide 11-12: Task 2 - Students either use the printable worksheet or the instructions on the slide to explain the advantages the English navy had over the Spanish navy and then explain ways that the Spanish navy were superior. There is an additional question which focuses on Cadiz.
  • Slide 13: Challenge Questions (which focus on the concept of importance).
  • Slide 14-16: Learning Review - A 12 question quiz with answers and printable question sheet.
